Dick Conklin is a freelance copywriter and copyeditor specializing in technical (computer hardware and software), business and marketing topics. He writes press releases, product brochures, book jackets, application briefs, magazine articles, ads, white papers and video scripts. He also edits book manuscripts and other technical publications.

Author of five books

Books . . . Dick was a Series Editor for book publisher Van Nostrand Reinhold, recommending new book subjects, qualifying subject matter experts as potential authors, and working with them from initial proposal to final manuscript.

He authored five books on personal computing:

  • PC Graphics, John Wiley & Sons (author), 1983
  • Power Portable Computing, John Wiley & Sons (author), 1985
  • OS/2: A Business Perspective, John Wiley & Sons (author), 1988
  • OS/2 Notebook, Microsoft Press (General Editor), 1991
  • OS/2 2.X Notebook, Van Nostrand Reinhold (General Editor), 1993

 

Magazines . . . In 1988 he launched IBM's first magazine for computer programmers, IBM Personal Systems Developer. The publication was later sold to Miller Freeman, Inc. as OS/2 Developer magazine, and he continued as editor. He also wrote the InfoCenter column for a sister publication, OS/2 Magazine. Later he managed its section for software developers.

Public Relations . . . Dick designed and implemented an online news service for members of IBM's Independent Vendor League, preparing and distributing news releases about new books and other products to computer trade publications, online services, and Web sites. He wrote press releases, ad copy and a published magazine article for International Software Solutions.

Disk's 28 years at IBM included several landmark projects.

1960s: Project Apollo. Member of the Apollo/Saturn launch team at the Kennedy Space Center, working on the pre-launch checkout systems used during the countdown.

The "first PC"

1970s: The First "PC":IBM introduced the first "PC", the IBM 5100 Portable Computer (left), in 1975. Dick worked in IBM's Miami sales office, responsible for 5100 sales in South Florida.

1980s: The IBM PC (right): The next IBM PC (the successful one) was announced in 1981. Dick's development team responsibilities included the DOS operating system and the BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN, and Pascal computer languages.

Some personal notes . . . Dick grew up in upstate New York and attended Hudson Valley Community College (AAS), Tri-State University (BSEE) and Rollins College (MBA). Dick and Arlene have been married for 38 years and have four kids (two boys, two girls) of which two are married. They also have three grandsons and a granddaughter.

The Conklins live in Marathon, in the Florida Keys.  They enjoy spending time with family, traveling, boating, fishing, Miami Dolphins football, and Keys restaurants and nightlife.

Dick writes the "Taking it Keysy" column in Time Out Magazine, reviewing restaurants, nightlife, and things to do in the Florida Keys.   He also writes an entertainment column for the Marathon Weekly newspaper.
