Wonder
Garden Series - 2008 Florida
Friendly Gardens The Marathon Garden Club, winner of awards from the
National Garden Club, and the University of Florida is pleased to offer The
Wonder Garden 2008 lecture series: The Art and Science of Florida Friendly
Gardens. The public is invited to classes scheduled from 9am.-12:00 on
Wednesdays, January 22, February 5 and February 26. All classes will be held
at the Marathon Garden Club, 5270 Overseas Highway, Marathon, FL, MM 50,
bayside. The cost is $15 per class or $30 for the series. Refreshments and
handouts are included. Matrix
Gardening, January 22. Matrix Gardening is a planting and garden design concept
that uses plant communities to replace much of the hard work needed to control
what happens in your garden. It is a timely topic that will help participants
to successfully restore or redesign their garden. Janice Duquesnel, Park
Biologist, Lignamvitae Key State Park will engage the audience in a
presentation of salt tolerant, drought resistant native plants that are
essential elements in a spectacular, easy care, low maintenance design. This
experience will help us make intelligent plant selections and design
decisions that can better survive the hazards of gardening in the keys. Organic
Fruit and Vegetable Gardening, February 5 February 5, 2008, Midge Jolly, Master Gardener with the
University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service will lead us in The
Science and Art of Organic Fruit and Vegetable Gardening. Since 1981 she has
grown vegetables organically in such varied locations as a bathtub in the
yard, aboard a 30' sailboat, a 30'x30' garden with 15' raised beds. The
audience will pursue organic and
sustainable gardening techniques to achieve a
more "permaculture state of
gardening." Rainwater
Harvesting, February 26 Central Sewers are coming to Marathon. Installation of the
City of Marathon Central Wastewater Systems in the is the impetus for
strategies to save money and encourage water conservation. On February 26 ,
Rainwater Harvesting with John Hammerstrom, will lead the audience to discover simple
methods of harvesting rainwater to capture the substantial free water falling
from the heavens and save on water and sewer costs! Francis Wagner will discuss system design and share his
experience in converting septic tanks to cisterns for water storage in $epic
to Cisterns – Water Re-use $aves. Board of Health
requirements for septic tank abandonment or conversion when property owners
connect to the central sewer and other useful information will be available. The
Garden Club welcomes full time and seasonal residents as well as visitors to
the Keys. Call
the Garden Club at (305) 743-4971 or (305) 743-4687 to enroll. Lynda Berrigan, Conservation Chairlady, Marathon Garden Club |
